What is Extended Validation (EV)

An EV certificate is a new type of certificate that is designed to prevent phishing attacks. It requires extended validation of your business and authorization to order the certificate and can take a few days to a few weeks to receive.

Before an EV SSL certificate can be issued, three important steps need to be performed by the EV SSL Certificate vendor. The steps are:

  • Confirm the existence of the Company through 3rd party sources
  • Verify that the request has been made on behalf of the company
  • Obtain mutual confirmation of the request between the Certificate Authority and the requesting party

Only certificates with extended validation will trigger the green bar in high-security web browsers.
